Fleet Spurs 0 – 3 Tadley Calleva
Fleet Spurs season continued their poor start to the league season with a 3-0 home reverse against Tadley Calleva, the Spurs have high hopes for this season, but after this showing they will have to improve greatly. The Spurs started with a similar side to Saturday with the addition of Matty Weston at the back, who joined on loan from Sandhurst.
The game was fairly open to begin with, which should have suited the Spurs team, and for the first 15 minutes we were on top, but after that period, we started playing too many long balls, and were not retaining the ball well enough, which left us quite stretched.
Playing a 4 5 1 system was clearly not working and this was quickly changed to a 4 4 2, and although we created a couple of half chances, Tadley were starting to get on top, and finally made the breakthrough after about 40 minutes, the Spurs allowed the Tadley striker far too much time around the box, and he turned and rifled a shot into the top corner. It was another avoidable goal, and something Fleet will have to work hard on in training, as they are conceding too many sloppy goals at present.
The half finished with us having another half chance when a cross from Luke Walsh was missed by the keeper, but with no player gambling on it, the ball just rolled away to safety, when any touch from Liam Tolley would have resulted in a goal.
The second half started in a similar vein to the Verwood match Saturday, where we gave up possession far to easy, which then set a precedent for the rest of the game.
Tadley extended their lead after about 50 minutes, when a long hopeful free kick was put into the box and with a free header allowing the tadley player to score.
This was increased further when a free kick on the edge of the box was given away, and this was punished by the Tadley player.
The game was lost by this stage, and Tadley were firmly in control, substitutions were made, but it was too little too late.
Manager Neil Baker was bitterly disappointed by his teams showing, and vowed there would be changes over the coming weeks, if players can not show they can step up to the plate.
