Fleet Spurs 2 – 1 Warminster Town

September 14th, 2009 admin

Fleet Spurs welcomed Warminster to Kennels Lane on Saturday on another hot day looking to follow on from their impressive 4-0 victory at Aldermaston.
They started the game with a few enforced changes from the Aldermaston game, with Martin Bickley ill, and Wayne Roberts unavailable, but this allowed Michael Watson and Matt Voyce back into the fold, and with new signings Gavin Taylor and Luke Thorn available to pack the midfield out.
Spurs started with the same 4 5 1 formation, something which looks like it will give Fleet a solid foundation to build on.

In all honesty the game was not a great spectacle with lots of passes going astray, and with a hard pitch causing bobbles, it was very difficult to get the ball down and play, but to be fair when Fleet did get it down we looked dangerous going forward.

The game started poorly, conceding after 5 minutes with a free header from a corner, this is proving to be a big problem at the moment, with probably 6 goals conceded already from players not taking responsibility, and is something that I am sure will be worked on in training.
Spurs got back in the game pretty quickly when a free kick 30 yards out on the left, was whipped in by Tom Chillery, but missed everyone and found the top right hand corner, a fortuitous equaliser but I am sure Chillers will claim that he “meant it”. There were not too many more chances in the first half, although a Neil Baker header from a free kick did go agonisingly wide.

Half Time 1-1

Second half Fleet were quicker out of the blocks, and about 15 minutes in a lovely passing sequence ended with Ben Clisby measuring a lovely ball to Luke Thorn who in turn played Adam Crittenden in with a lovely weighted pass, a great touch and quick strike found the back of the net and we had taken the lead for the first time.

The rest of the half Fleet for some reason sat back trying to defend the league, something which we can ill afford to do, as when the ball is pumped into the box we do look suspect at times. But Fleet managed to see the game out, even though Warminster will probably feel they should have got a point from the game, and that is now 2 wins on the bounce with a potentially tough trip to Porchester on Saturday.
