Fleet Spurs 0 Andover New Street 2
(Wessex League Division 1)
A disappointing game for Spurs. In the first half, both sides created chances, which they could not convert. However, just as it looked as if the half would finish goalless, a slick right-wing move by Andover and poor tackling at the centre of the Spurs defence left Nic Turpin clear on goal. The striker unselfishly passed to skipper Vince Rusher who made no mistake, though there was a suspicion of offside.
The second half was more of the same, with John Finnieston missing Spurs’ best chance as he shot against the advancing keeper. In the last quarter, Spurs switched to three at the back as they went all out for the equaliser, but they inevitably left gaps in defence and man of the match Rusher put the result beyond doubt with a clinically take stoppage time goal.
Spurs Reserves did not play, but the A team lost 2-1 to Headley United Reserves in the Aldershot League Division 1 Group B Cup, while the Vets had a very comfortable 5-1 victory against Shalford B, their goals coming from Roy Allaway (2), Dan Gardiner, Dave McArthur & Richard Swannell.
Spurs first team have a week off, their next match being on Tuesday 6 October against local rivals Farnborough North End in the Hampshire Senior Cup (kick-off 7.45). Their next league game is against undefeated league leaders Fawley at Southwood on Saturday 10 October (kick-off 3.00) at Southwood.
