Otterbourne 2 – 0 Fleet Spurs Reserves

October 3rd, 2009 admin

Spurs first team had a free Saturday this week, but they have two demanding home games in the next week.  On Tuesday they entertain local rivals Farnborough North End in the Hampshire Senior Cup (kick-off 7.45), and on Saturday the visitors for a league game are unbeaten Fawley (kick-off 3.00).

The Reserves visited Hampshire Premier Football League Otterbourne in a Hampshire Intermediate Cup 2nd Round game.  Spurs started strongly and Jack Chambers was unlucky to hit the bar with a header from Ross Blowers’ corner.  Spurs were holding their own, and it came as something of a surprise when Kevin Gleeson gave the home side the lead on the half-hour with a powerful shot that went in via the keeper’s fingertips and the underside of the bar.  Otterbourne then began to get on top, but resolute defending by Spurs kept the sheet clean until the break.

Immediately after half-time left-back Craig Willson doubled the lead with another powerful long shot, and the home side took control of the game.  However, Spurs continued to defend well, and when Otterbourne were able to penetrate the Spurs back line, Jonathan Sheppard made some excellent saves to prevent any further score.

Spurs were beaten fairly and squarely by a better and physically stronger side, but can take great credit from a good battling display against a higher-status team.
Spurs A team travelled to Andover, where they were soundly beaten by Danebury Sports in the Hampshire Junior A Cup.  The 3-0 score-line was a just reflection of the play.
