Fleet Spurs 4 Hythe & Dibden 0
Fleet Spurs returned to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing four nil defeat of Hythe & Dibden.
Having played Hythe on Tuesday night in the Russell Cotes cup and lost, Fleet were always going to be keen to avenge this, and with a number of players returning to the squad, the team looked to have a bit of steel about them, and started the game like a train.
Fleet found themselves 2 goals up very early, when a great ball in to the box from Tom Chillery resulted in panic in the Hythe defence and a clearance cannoned of Adam Crittenden’s heel into the back of the net to give an early lead.
This was quickly doubled up when a long kick from keeper Mark Appleby, evaded the Hythe defence, leaving Adam Crittenden a clear run on goal, and enabled him to execute expertly to give Fleet a 2 goal cushion.
In all honesty the Spurs were not playing the good football that they had done in recent games, but they just seemed to be more solid.
Fleet could have added to their first half tally, but Danny Harrisons cheeky back heel clipped the post, and Sam Knowles should have done better when through on goal. The Spurs came out second half and with Ben Clisby having to come off with a hamstring injury meaning a reshuffle of the team, it took 15 minutes for Fleet to get back in their stride. The decisive goal came after about 65 minutes when a Luke Thorn corner was powerfully headed into the top right hand corner from Jack Chambers, who was excellent all day.
Shortly after this Hythe were reduced to 10 men, when a shocking tackle by their right back on Jack Chambers was rightfully punished by the referee, despite the remonstrations by the away bench, but in all honesty even the Hythe forwards were confirming what a poor tackle it had been. With the game seemingly won Fleet made a few changes bringing off Tom Chillery, Jack Chambers and replacing them with Jon Tanfield and Matt Voyce.
And it was Jon Tanfield who scored the fourth, when he ran unchallenged through on goal, and smashed the ball in to the top left hand corner. Fleet still had chances to score through Sam Knowles and Luke Thorn and on another day the Spurs could easily have had 6 or 7.
