Whitchurch United 1 Fleet Spurs 2
(Wessex League Division 1)
Spurs came away from second-placed Whitchurch with all three points notching up what was certainly their best result following what was probably their best performance of the season.
The first half was evenly fought, with both attacks creating chances. However, both keepers – Spurs’ Mark Appleby and Whitchurch’s Greg Wellman – proved themselves equal to everything that came their way. Both made some outstanding saves, and the blank scoresheet at the break was a fair reflection of the game.
After the interval Spurs quickly got on top and dominated the game, their slick passing preventing United getting into the game. It was no surprise when they took the lead after Adam Crittenden had turned past his marker, who brought him down for an indisputable penalty. Sam Knowles made no mistake from the spot, blasting the ball into the top of the net. Spurs continued comfortably on top and, after more good work by Crittenden, Knowles doubled the lead ten minutes from the end with a powerful shot into the top corner from 25 yards that gave Wellman no chance. However, Spurs made life difficult for themselves when slackness in what had otherwise been an impressively solid defence gave sub Wayne Sale the chance to reduce the arrears. To make matters worse, Spurs’ Dan Sleet, having already been booked, got himself sent off for kicking the ball away before the restart. Fleet held out for victory, and are now 16th in the league with games in hand on all the teams around them.
Manager Neil Baker said ‘I was very pleased with the lads’ performance today. Now we need to build on it and push forward towards the top half of the table.’
Spurs entertain East Cowes Victoria on Saturday – kick-off 3.00.
Spurs Reserves remain top of Aldershot League Senior Division with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Hindhead Athletic. Sam Tittler scored the goal, but his day was spoilt when he was dismissed shortly afterwards. In Division 1, Spurs As drew with 2-2 at Watchetts, while the Vets were knocked out of the Hampshire Veterans Cup when they lost 1-2 to Rising Sun (Winchester) Vets.
