Warminster Town 0 – 1 Fleet Spurs
Fleet Spurs continued their fine run of form which is now increased to 11 games, with a gritty 3 points at Weymouth Street on a cold Wednesday night.
With Warminster being one of the Spurs longest journeys, to play them on a Wednesday night was always going to prove difficult in getting a full squad together, so we were without a number of players last night which included Luke Thorn, Phil Boddy, Michael Watson Jon Tanfield, Matt Voyce and Kieren Arscott.
Neil Baker only made one change from Saturday’s win against Horndean with Jack Chambers replacing Luke Thorn in the middle. The game itself was scrappy in parts, but some of that can be put down to the state of the pitch, which was as expected at this time of the year, very heavy.
Fleet started the better of the 2 teams, and had numerous balls put into the box, but without really getting on the end of them, whilst at the other end Warminster were being restricted to long distance shots. The Spurs took the lead after around 35 minutes, when a Stuart Tanfield corner was controlled by Adam Crittenden and laid into the path of the oncoming Ben Edwards, who smashed it into the back of the net.
The first half petered out, and Fleet went in having just shaded the first half.
Second half and the Spurs came out flying, with chances for Sam Knowles and Adam Crittenden, but could just not finish the game off, as a side we were beginning to get more joy down the flanks, and started to open Warminster up.
Again Warminster were only restricted to long range shots, and in all honesty “Apples” did not really have a save to make in the 90 minutes.
Fleet saw out any pressure that Warminster put on, and went back up the A303 with another 3 points in the bag.
In reflection this was not the best performance by the Fleet lads on a tricky pitch, but we showed the steel that we needed to continue our run, a few notable performers were Ben Clisby at right back and also a solid second half performance from Sam Knowles.
