Fleet Spurs 3 AFC Aldermaston 0

March 8th, 2010 admin

(Wessex League Division 1)

Spurs got back to winning ways with a comfortable if not entirely convincing victory over Aldermaston.

Spurs soon gained the ascendancy and took the lead after ten minutes when top scorer Adam Crittenden swept home a low right-wing cross from Jack Chambers to score his nineteenth of the season.  Aldermaston defended resolutely and had a number of quick breaks but never really threatened the Fleet goal and only some excellent saves by keeper Ben Smith kept the score down.  Spurs did not help themselves by giving the ball away too easily and poor finishing.

After the break, Spurs soon doubled their lead when Tom Chillery scored after good work by Crittenden, and midway through the half, sub Wayne Roberts – welcomed back after a four-month absence through injury – put the result beyond doubt when he headed in a Luke Thorn free-kick for his first goal for the club.

The game petered out as Spurs, having used all their substitutes, were reduced to ten men when unlucky sub Michael Watson was carried off with a leg injury within moments of coming on.

Fleet are now up to seventh position in what is still a very tight league.  They entertain Amesbury Town on Saturday at Southwood (kick-off 3.00), when they will hope for a better overall performance.  Manager Neil Baker said: ‘Although Aldermaston are sitting there with no points, they came to us with the right attitude and made us work very hard for the three points.  Whilst it is always nice to score lots of goals against teams at the bottom of the table, I was happy enough with the victory, although again we kept missing great chances, something we need to re-address.’
