Hythe & Dibden 4 Fleet Spurs 1 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)

Spurs never recovered from a lacklustre first-half performance and eventually succumbed to a Hythe side that throughout were physically stronger and quicker to close down their opponents. Fleet can take some consolation because they are a young side who are showing signs of development and because their heads never dropped.

They say a week is a long time in football. They say no two games are the same. They say anyone can play up front. ‘They’ say a lot of things but are not always right. After last week’s 6-2 victory vs. Farnham United confidence was high, and rightly so. All the signs were there Meako was back in the squad; Capon was back in the squad, Newton had a new haircut and Wallace had bought two packets of wine gums for a £1.00.

Fleet Spurs 1 Warminster Town 3 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)

Three sloppy goals in the quarter of an hour after half-time meant another defeat for a young Spurs side, who despite a brave rally in the last few minutes were unable to reply with more than a consolation goal.

After a bright start by Warminster, the first half was mostly uninspiring with both sides putting far too much trust in long aimless balls forward and Fleet in particular giving away possession too easily. Overall Town were the better side, but Spurs created the best chance after twenty minutes when 16-year-old debutant Matt Cooper had a clear sight of goal, but keeper Scott Lewis made a good save and a visiting defender completed the clearance.

This weekend saw the ‘A’s welcome new comers Farnham United to fortress kennels lane. The treatment room has had many visitors in recent weeks and had two more patients this week in the form of Paul ‘paper ankles’ Capon and Russ ‘can’t think of what to call him’ Harvey. Capon was suffering from an ankle knock sustained in the vet’s game last week and Harvey was suffering from a back injury sustained during a weekend away with his partner… As two entered the treatment room one left and the club were delighted to see the return to action of goal keeper Ben ‘screech powers’ Meakings. After 5 weeks out on the side lines the team have not struggled one bit and Meako, although fit (?!) was not named in the starting 11. Thornett clearly will not be giving up the number one jersey without a fight. It was a great boost for the whole team to have everyone’s favourite number 2 keeper back in the squad. This week also saw the return of David ‘goof’ Baker. The self confessed ‘bad boy’ of soccer, the man who prides himself on making the beautiful game ugly was back after a 3 week suspension for a red card. That’s right listeners a RED card.

Petersfield Town 1 Fleet Spurs 0 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)

It took a late goal for Petersfield to beat Spurs, but in truth they were the better side on the day and deserved their victory. However, things might have been different if a controversial first-half decision had gone the other way.

Fleet Spurs 2 Stockbridge 0 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)

Spurs returned to winning form with a well-deserved victory against Stockbridge.

Fleet soon gained the ascendancy with their flowing football, and Sam Cobbett twice and debutant Rinaldo Kumbakisaka had powerful shots just off target. The half continued in the same vein with Stockbridge rarely threatening and Fleet missing a number of goal chances, while Mindy Kuodys was unlucky to hit the bar with a powerful header from a Bimal Balal corner. Even keeper Ryan Bone had a very long-range ‘shot’ (possibly intended) from inside his own penalty area which his opposite number Allan Ralph had to head in extremis for a corner. Stockbridge made some breaks that called Bone into defensive action on a few occasions but with little real threat. It was a surprise that the score-sheet remained blank until the interval, as the home team had dominated posession and created almost all the goal chances.

Camberley Kings: 2 – Fleet Spurs A: 10

They say records are made to be broken. Well that’s exactly what the ‘A’ team is doing this season. Loz – Number of injuries suffered by one player in a single game, Thornett – Number of expletives squeezed into the half time team talk, Wallace – number of games without a goal, Capon/Hammond – number of votes for tw@t of the match… The list goes on. This week two more records were smashed as Spurs recorded their highest ever league win. With last week’s emphatic victory at Froyle still fresh in the memory the Spurs faithful turned out in droves hoping to see more goals… and they were not disappointed.

AFC Froyle: 0 – Fleet Spurs: A 5

After last week’s defeat in the Hampshire cup it was back to league for Spurs as they visited AFC Froyle. Prior to kick off the club was rocked with the news that inspirational captain Wallace would have to sit this one out through injury. The ever-increasing injury list saw Thornett having to shuffle his pack again with G slotting in next to Mocca at centre back. Last week’s two goal hero Scott found him self at full back with the ‘hit man’ returning up top. Nicolle started the match despite being spotted stumbling out of charcoal grill in the early hours of Saturday morning with former Fleet spurs player Jimmy ’5 bellies’ Toomer.

Fleet Spurs 0 Whitchurch United 2 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)
Spurs were well beaten by a very good Whitchurch side, who thoroughtly merited their victory and preserved their unbeaten league record for this season.

The game started with both sides playing some lively football, but the visitors soon established dominance as they settled into a pattern of quick and enterprising attacks . However, a mixture of poor finishing by Whitchurch, resolute defending by Fleet, some excellent saves by Ryan Bone, and a large slice of luck somehow kept the score-sheet blank until the interval.

United Services Portsmouth 2 Fleet Spurs 1 (Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Division 1)
This was a disappointing result for Spurs, though they couldn’t really begrudge a skilful USP side the points. However, it was so nearly a different story.

The game started brightly with Spurs the better team, retaining possession well on the excellent Victory Stadium turf. Quarter of an hour into the game, James Wills bravely headed the ball on under enormous pressure from a Portsmouth defender, and Martyn Williams lashed the loose ball high into the net. The game continued to be lively, with both teams attempting to play creative football with half-chances at either end. Midway through the half, Services began to get on top, but Spurs probably just about deserved their half-time lead.
