On Wednesday, Fleet Spurs entertained Tadley Calleva and were ridiculously bad. On Saturday, the visitors were Downton, and Spurs were sublimely good. From the ridiculous to the sublime in less than three days.
The Tadley game can be summarised very briefly. Ben Nicholls gave the visitors the lead just before half time after cleverly wrong-footing the Spurs defence. After the break Shaun Dallimore with a header from a free kick and Ashley Ledger with a well-taken free kick put the game beyond Spurs’ reach before the hour, and the home side never looked like threatening the Tadley goal.

Fleet Spurs season continued their poor start to the league season with a 3-0 home reverse against Tadley Calleva, the Spurs have high hopes for this season, but after this showing they will have to improve greatly. The Spurs started with a similar side to Saturday with the addition of Matty Weston at the back, who joined on loan from Sandhurst.
The game was fairly open to begin with, which should have suited the Spurs team, and for the first 15 minutes we were on top, but after that period, we started playing too many long balls, and were not retaining the ball well enough, which left us quite stretched.

Fleet Spurs suffered their second successive defeat when they went down at Verwood Town, who now sit proudly on top of the league with 7 points from 3 games. Both sides created and missed chances in the opening quarter, but Charles Elysee, the smallest player on the field, gave Verwood the lead with a well-placed header from a right-wing cross. The Spurs defence were to blame, having left Elysee unmarked. Spurs soon equalised when defender Dean Evans headed a fine cross from Luke Walsh powerfully past his own keeper. Five minutes later, the persistence of Ben Woozley, playing in an unaccustomed centre-back role because of injuries in the Spurs squad, gained its reward as he fired powerfully home at the third attempt. At the break, Spurs deserved their narrow lead.
Fleet Spurs make the journey up to the New Forest and Verwood Town F.C on Saturday to try and get their season up and running. After the poor start against Hamble ASSC, the lads will be looking to make amends and try to bring home the 3 points with them.
Again they will be without Ben Edwards who is likely to be out for up to 6 weeks with an ankle injury, and Michael Watson, although the latter should be available for Wednesday’s game against Tadley.

Fleet opened the league campaign for the 2009/10 in disappointing fashion, with a 3-1 defeat at last season’s premier side Hamble ASSC. With almost a full squad to choose from with the exception of Michael Watson, Ben Edwards and Tom Chillery, the Spurs would have been confident on starting the season with a win, and following on from their excellent pre season campaign.
The day itself proved to be a bit of a scorcher, with the temperature in its mid 20’s, and this looked like it had more of an effect on the Fleet team. The game started off quite evenly, with both teams having a couple of chances, and Ben Meakings in the Fleet goal making an excellent stop.
