Spurs first team did not play. Their arranged game at AFC Portchester was postponed because in the opinion of the match referee, the goalposts did not meet the requirements necessary for the game to start.

Spurs Reserves had a hard-fought 2-1 win over Hale Rovers in the Aldershot League Senior Division. The visitors scored first, but Spurs were ahead by the break with goals by Martin Ball and Ross Blowers. Although Hale had a number of good chances to equalise or even win, they spurned them all and there was no further scoring.

The A team gained their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw at Southwood against Headley United Reserves in Division 1. David Love scored Spurs’ goal.

The Vets had a very comfortable 5-0 victory against Inter Mytchett Crusaders in Division 3. Hot-shot Mark Gardiner notched four and would have had a nap hand had player-manager Roy Allaway not tapped the ball in from about 6 inches – reminiscent of David Nugent’s sole England goal.

Spurs first team entertain Andover New Street in a Wessex League Division 1 game at Southwood (kick-off 3.00).

The poor start to the season continued for Fleet Spurs A as we were beaten 3-1 by local rivals Letef. From the off, it was clear that many of the Fleet players didn’t fancy running around in the heat. Meaningful challenges were few and far between, opposing players were not shut down and were given space to do what they fancied with the ball which luckily, most of the time, wasn’t too damaging. Stringing two consecutive passes together proved tricky but Fleet did manage to create the better chances in the first half, however, true to form, the forwards gloriously spurned everything that came their way.

The visitors took the lead when Dan Fluety glanced a header through his own net. Letef offered little more in attack and Fleet got the equalizer just before half-time when Kev Wallace found himself on the edge of the box. With the ball dropping out of the summer sky, Wallace let fly with an impressive high-kick that Mr Miyagi would have been proud of – unfortunately for Wallace, he missed the ball, although it bounced kindly and he smashed it into the top left corner at the second attempt. The game was a poor spectacle and limped into the break on level terms.

In the second half, Fleet shuffled the pack from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 but showed no signs of improving. Letef managed an early second half goal – Fleet giving up the ball on the half-way line and allowing the opposition to slice through the defence with minimal effort and slide the ball past a helpless Thornett. The writer missed much of the second half as he was enjoying a hot shower but emerged just in time to see Fleet concede again late in the game, the Letef substitute marksman given the freedom of the box to smash the ball into the roof of the net with Thornett wincing as the ball whistled past his ear.

A poor showing from the A-team but surely things can only get better from here??

(Aldershot League Division 1)

In a traditionally poor start to the season, Fleet Spurs A went down 3-2 to Eversley A at Southwood. A sloppy first half performance saw Fleet go in at half time 2-1 down, with David Love scoring an exquisite chip into the top right corner for Fleet. A rousing half-time team talk from stand-in gaffer Winno inspired Fleet to make a battling start to the second half, which unsettled Eversley – Russ Hammond scoring a scrambled equaliser after confusion amongst the Eversley defence. Eversley grabbed a late winner, the Fleet defence giving their forward time to turn on the edge of the box, do the fandango and slowly roll the ball into the corner of the net.

Despite the result though, the second half performance gives Fleet plenty of hope for the season ahead
