Yorktown 3 Fleet Spurs 0
After last week’s win, anticipation for another one was high, and to some extent, may well have worked against us. In a fairly evenly matched game Spurs suffered once more with their positional play. Individual effort was exceptional, but not enough to break the Yorktown defence. Robbie Coupland played well in goal in the first half letting only one ball in to the net, which was almost unstoppable.
The boys played well individually throughout the game with some exceptional shows of skill, but in the end, the team performance that was evident last week just wasn’t there this week, passes didn’t make their targets, clearances were intercepted and shots were consistently blocked. A bigger effort to approach the ball and tackle the opposition as soon as possible needs to be enforced, but other than that Spurs played well against one of the better teams in the league. A solid performance from James McNicholas after weeks of illness saw him take away the Player of the Week trophy.
A 1 - 0 deficit at half time seemed about right, but a hard push from Fleet in the last ten minutes of the second half saw the entire team pushing for goal, unfortunately leaving our own goal almost totally unprotected, a scenario that Yorktown took advantage of twice in the last few minutes.
